In Slavic history, a Druzhina (derived from the word drug, meaning companion or friend) was a select elite force of professional warriors who served as the personal bodyguards, inner military council, and elite cavalry for the ruling Grand Prince. They were not common conscripts, but highly trained, wealthy, and fiercely loyal aristocratic soldiers who lived within the prince’s court and formed the backbone of the state’s military power.
