The United Nations (UN) is an international organization founded on October 24, 1945, following the devastation of World War II. Headquartered in New York City, it serves as a global forum where 193 Member States discuss and collaborate on international law, global security, economic development, social progress, and human rights Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The UN operates under the mandate of its founding treaty, the UN Charter, which outlines four foundational goals:

  • Maintaining International Peace and Security: Deploying peacekeeping missions, facilitating diplomacy, and preventing conflicts.

  • Protecting Human Rights: Guarding fundamental liberties globally, rooted heavily in milestones like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) (Eleanor Roosevelt holding the English-language version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1949)).

  • Delivering Humanitarian Aid: Providing emergency relief during natural disasters, famines, and armed conflicts through agencies like UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP).

  • Upholding International Law: Settling legal disputes between nations and prosecuting war crimes through international courts.

The work of the United Nations is divided among six principal bodies, five of which are located at the New York headquarters:

  • The General Assembly (UNGA): The main policy-making and representative body. Every one of the 193 Member States has one vote, meaning small nations have the same voting power as global superpowers.

  • The Security Council (UNSC): The most powerful organ, responsible for maintaining global peace. It consists of 15 members, but dominance is held by the P5 (Permanent Five): the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. These five nations hold veto power, meaning any one of them can completely block a resolution.

  • The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC): Coordinates the economic and social work of the UN, overseeing specialized agencies like the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNESCO.

  • The International Court of Justice (ICJ): The principal judicial organ of the UN. Notably, it is the only main organ not located in New York, operating instead out of The Hague, Netherlands.

  • The Secretariat: The administrative heart of the UN, running day-to-day operations. It is led by the Secretary-General, who acts as the chief administrative officer and global diplomat.

  • The Trusteeship Council: Originally created to supervise trust territories moving toward independence, it suspended operations in 1994 when the last territory achieved self-governance.
