By 1963, Birmingham was considered one of the most rigidly segregated and racially violent cities in America. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) launched Project C (for “confrontation”), a campaign of nonviolent direct action involving sit-ins, economic boycotts, and peaceful marches to dismantle the city’s Jim Crow laws.
